THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~  January 10, 2023  (LSNews)   Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra (TBSO) has received two grants totalling $17,000 through the Thunder Bay Community Foundation to support greater accessibility to classical music and meaningful collaboration with Indigenous partners

The Thunder Bay Community Foundation Community Fund will provide funding for a free public concert, "Noondaagotoon” on May 5 th at Fort William Historical Park. Featuring Indigenous artists including David Wilkinson-Simard and the Thunder Mountain Singers and Elder Rita Fenton with a women’s hand drumming group, this concert has been conceived in the spirit of cultural exchange and reconciliation. FAMILY

An Indigenous knowledge keeper takes us through time to meet the mysterious “small horses of the deep woods” who were helpers and spirit guides to First Nations and Métis people. Exploring the diversity of Indigenous cultures, we visit the magnificent Horse Nations of the prairies and Northern Ontario. The Spirit Horse Returns combines an all-new rich and tuneful orchestral score, delightful songs, traditional teachings, and stunning colourful visual art. It provides young audiences
with inspiring and age-appropriate explorations of truth and reconciliation.

Featuring

  • Naomi Woo, conductor
  • Ken MacDonald, horn
  • Jodi Contin, narrator
  • Rhonda Snow, visual artist and knowledge keeper
  • Music by Kevin Lau, with additional music by Jodi Contin and Andrew Balfour. Visual Art by Artist and Knowledge Keeper Rhonda Snow.

The Board and management of the TBSO are most grateful to the Thunder Bay Community Foundation and their contributors — specifically the TBCF Community Fund and the Danny Clara Legacy Fund — for these generous grants that provide the opportunity for everyone in Thunder Bay to experience the beauty and emotional depth of classical music.
