Ryan Hughes Named Thunder Bay’s Deputy Chief of Police

THUNDER BAY, ONTAIRO     Auguest 8,  2019  (LSN)  The Thunder Bay Police Services Board (the Board) is pleased to announce that Ryan Hughes has been appointed Deputy Chief of Police.  This appointment follows an extensive search.

“As Chair of the Thunder Bay Police Services Board I am pleased to welcome Ryan Hughes to the position of Deputy Chief of the Thunder Bay Police Service,” said Ms. Celina Reitberger.  “I want to commend the hiring committee for their hard work and excellent choice. I am confident that his experience and professionalism will be essential as the Board moves forward with the recommendations from Senator Murray Sinclair's report aimed at eliminating systemic racism. We are eager to work with Ryan and look forward to a healthy collaboration with him in his new capacity.”

Deputy Chief Designate Ryan Hughes has been in policing since 1998.  His extensive experience includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and 21 years of policing experience, including a range of supervisory and fields operations roles with both the York Regional Police and Thunder Bay Police Service.

In his most recent position as Detective Inspector of the Criminal Investigations Branch for the Thunder Bay Police Service, he managed, directed and evaluated the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Units, ensuring they meet performance standards and adhere to corporate policies. 

During his time as Detective Sergeant for the Thunder Bay Police, Hughes supervised activities of all units within the Criminal Investigations Branch, managed investigations and enforcement strategies and shared information with other law enforcement agencies, community organizations, businesses, school boards, and neighbourhoods to implement crime prevention initiatives.

“It’s an honor to be the new Deputy Chief of Police,” said Deputy Chief Designate Ryan Hughes.  “There is a lot of positive work happening in the community and I look forward to working with Chief Hauth to continue that work to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone in Thunder Bay.”

Deputy Chief Designate Hughes was sworn in at the Thunder Bay Courthouse, 125 Brodie Street North, Courtroom 206 at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 8, 2019.  All are welcome.  Photo and interview opportunities will be available to the media.
