needed 40 detox beds in Thunder Bay
Letter to the EditorTo Michael Tibollo Associate Minister of Mental Health and Addictions
THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~ January 28, 2022 (LSNews) I'm not sure if you (Michael Tibollo are aware of how bad the drug situation is here in Thunder Bay. Last year, 2021, we had about 100 drug overdose deaths, which I refer to as drug induced homicides. Mostly due to the fentanyl the drug dealers are putting in their drugs.
My son died May 2, 2021 from a drug induced homicide (someone purposely gave him drugs laced with way too much fentanyl. 21ng/ml where > 3 is lethal. Perfect murder) He wanted to get better. He was going to go into detox and rehab. But there is such a process and wait time to get in and not enough beds. He decided he could do it on his own.
This is the case for many people trying to get into detox and rehabilitation. A lot of times the results are the same as my sons - death.
Drug addiction is a real problem that needs to be addressed here. We have the highest rate of drug induced homicides in all of Ontario.
We need the 40 detox beds here so that more of our children can get help before it's too late for them and follow up rehab resources.
This also includes alcoholics who are trying to get help. I know of someone who was supposed to be going into detox and the day he was to go in they told him they had no bed. He waited for months and still never got a bed. He never did get a bed. He went back to work and was trying to cut back on his own.
This is very difficult to do on your own for either alcohol or drugs if not impossible.
Thank you for your time and consideration into this matter.
