SAULT STE MARIE, SUDBURY, THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~  April 8, 2022 (LSNews)  The 2022 Municipal election takes place on Monday, October 24. The City of Sault Ste. Marie will elect one Mayor, and 10 Councillors. In addition, voters will elect school board trustees for English and French boards.

A person may be nominated for office if they: 

(a) reside in the City of Sault Ste. Marie (or are the owner or tenant of land or the spouse of an owner or tenant) 

(b) are a Canadian citizen; 

(c) are at least 18 years old; and 

(d) are not prohibited from voting, by reason of serving a sentence of imprisonment in a penal or correctional institution; being a corporation; being an executor or trustee; being a person convicted of a corrupt practice described in the Municipal Elections Act; or a former candidate in the 2018 election who failed to file financial statements. 

Before incurring any expenses or collecting any money, candidates must file a nomination form along with the filing fee with the City Clerk. Candidates for City Council will also require 25 endorsement signatures from eligible electors. Forms are available on the City’s election webpage at www.saultstemarie.ca/election2022. 

Nomination forms must be signed by the candidate and filed in person or by an agent (no email or fax) with the City Clerk. 

Two pieces of identification must be presented showing name, qualifying address and signature. 

Filing fees are $200 for Mayor or regional chair and $100 for all other offices (cash, debit or certified cheque). 

Appointments to complete the nomination filing process are recommended to ensure availability of the City Clerk. Appointments may be made by calling 705-759-5388 or emailing cityclerk@cityssm.on.ca.  

A two-hour Candidate Training Session presented by the Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will be held by Zoom at 6 p.m. on April 26, 2022, https://us02web.zoom.us/j/87336214070. Topics to be covered include an overview of the responsibilities set out in legislation for candidates/third-party advertisers and a general overview of the roles and responsibilities of members of Council.

Information for candidates and voters:

  • The election website is now live and will be updated as new information becomes available at: www.tbayvotes.ca
  • Nomination Period opens May 2, and packages can be picked up in person at City Hall or downloaded from the election website at: www.tbayvotes.ca.
  • Candidates must book an appointment this year to file their nomination papers at City Hall, appointments can be booked by calling 625-2230 or through the online scheduling tool on the election website.
  • A Candidate Information Session will be held April 20 at 7 pm. Candidates may attend in-person at City Hall, or view online at: www.tbayvotes.ca. The session will also be aired on Shaw Spotlight Channel 10, BlueCurve Channel 105, and Tbaytel TV Channel 110. . Call the Election Office to reserve a seat as space is limited at: 627-3859.

With the goal of continuing to make voting easy and convenient, the City is also encouraging a Vote Anywhere option this year to give voters the flexibility of casting their ballots in-person, online and new for 2022, drive-thru voting. More information about voting locations and drive-thru voting will be available in September.

Municipal voters are also encouraged to confirm that they are on the municipal voters list, as the voters list for the Municipal Election is separate from the provincial and federal elections. To confirm you are on the Municipal Voters list visit: www.voterlookup.ca

 

The four-year council term of office starts November 15, 2022 and runs until November 14, 2026.

Justice Centre applies to participate in Emergencies Act Inquiry

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~~   June 23, 2022 (LSNews)  The Justice Centre has submitted an application for participatory standing at the inquiry being held into the declaration of the Emergencies Act by the federal government in response to the February trucker convoy and protest in Ottawa and blockades at various border crossings across Canada. If the application succeeds, the Justice Centre will have certain participatory rights at the inquiry, which may include a seat at counsel table, the opportunity to make evidentiary, factual and legal submissions, submit policy papers, suggest and cross-examine witnesses, and/or participate in deliberations.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~  June 23, 2022 (LSNews)  This morning in a Media Release on Facebook Chief Hauth announced On Tuesday June 14th, I gave the Thunder Bay Police Services Board notice of my intent to retire as of June 14, 2023. At that point, I will have completed my 30th year as a Police Officer with the Thunder Bay Police Service.

A few hours later Ontario Civilian Police Commission Serves a Notice of Hearing on the Chief of Thunder Bay Police Services Following an investigation under s. 25 of the Police Services Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. P.15. (PSA) into certain alleged conduct of Ms. Sylvie Hauth, Chief of the Thunder Bay Police Service, the Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC), has determined that a hearing into the allegations is warranted. Accordingly, a Notice of Hearing has been served on Chief Hauth setting out three counts of alleged misconduct, contrary to the Code of Conduct included In Ontario Regulation 268/10 enacted under the PSA.

Weapon and Drug Charges Laid

SAULT STE MARIE, ONTARIO  ~~~~~   June 23, 2022 (LSNews)  On June 22, 2022, officers with Patrol Services charged 43-year-old William Ross with weapon and drug offences.

Around 4:00 a.m. officers observed a vehicle parked at a business in the 800 block of Great Northern Road. Officers conducted a traffic stop. Officers approached the vehicle and the lone occupant identified as the accused. Officers discovered the accused was wanted for breach of probation and he was arrested on the strength of the warrant.
