Thunder Bay Museum hosting a traveling exhibit on the Holocaust

And in 1948, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~  March 1, 2022 (LSNews) The Thunder Bay Museum would like to announce that we are hosting a traveling exhibit from the Montreal Holocaust Museum titled “And in 1948, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates.  The exhibit raises awareness about the genocide of the Jews by presenting its history and reflecting on the impacts of racism and discrimination in our society.  

.  It commemorates the victims of the Holocaust and honours the survivors who made Canada their new home.  The exhibit will be available to the public on the Museum’s second floor from April 6, 2022 until June 26, 2022. 

The Museum, in partnership with the Shaarey Shomayim Congregation of Thunder Bay has, developed a wide range of complimentary programming for patrons to partake in while the exhibit is in Thunder Bay.  The list of special events is below and preregistration and/or tickets for events can be found here: https://thunderbaymuseum1.wildapricot.org/Member-Events

  • 11 April – Exhibit Opening Reception - “And in 1948, I came to Canada”: The Holocaust in Six Dates
  • 27 April – Virtual Lecture - Dr. Valerie Hébert - 'Nothing is to be gained by creating an internal problem in an effort to meet an International one': Canada's Response to the Jewish Refugee Crisis
  • 10-12 May – Concert Series – A Song Rings Out: Lost Composers of the Holocaust
    • Chamber music concerts featuring works by Jewish composers impacted by the Holocaust.  These concerts are being arranged by Michelle Zapf-Belanger, Section Violinist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra. 
  • 19 May – Lecture - Mark Scharf - Child of Holocaust Survivors

There will also be programming available for the schools to partake in through field trips, virtual programs, and lesson plans.

The exhibition looks at the history of the Holocaust and the Second World War through six key dates, as well as Canada’s reaction to these events.

  • 1933 Nazi rise to power and anti-Jewish laws
  • 1939 Beginning of the war and creation of ghettos
  • 1941 Invasion of the USSR and mass murders by mobile killing units
  • 1942 Deportation to the death camps
  • 1943 Resistance

MARATHON, ONTARIO ~~~~~~  December 31, 2022  (LSNews)  Constable Matthew Foster reports that back on December 23, 2022 

at approximately 1:08 a.m., members of the Superior East OPP Detachment attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle failed to stop and continued westbound on Highway 17 toward the Marathon, Schreiber, and Nipigon Detachments.

During a second attempt to stop the vehicle in the Marathon area, a police cruiser was struck, resulting in minor damage. The officers were not injured. The vehicle then continued westbound on Highway 17.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~~  December 30, 2022 (OLSNews)  A 33 year old JESSICA RAVEN (DOB:May 12,1989) appeared by video from the Thunder Bay Correctional Center before Justice of the Peace Tobey Meyer for a bail hearing today, Friday December 30,2022.

RAVEN has a criminal history of robbery, breach of court orders and failing to attend court.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  ~~~~~  December 30, 2022 (LSNews)   A 51 year old ADRIAN CRAWFORD (June 4,1971) appeared by video from the Thunder Bay Jail today, Friday December 30,2022 before Justice of the Peace Nancy Tulloch who ordered that he be released on $500 no deposit bail with conditions:

  • -reside with surety, Jamie Della-Mattia at 1326 Broadmore Ave in Thunder Bay
  • -curfew of 10pm to 6am unless with surety
  • -no drugs or weapons
  • -no driving

THUNDER BAY BALL HOCKEY SCAM INVESTIGATION RESULTS IN CRIMINAL CHARGES

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO ~~~~  December 30, 2022  (LSNews)  Inside Edition sources indicate that a white male & white female have been criminally charged in an ongoing investigation into a large fraud involving over 100 families with some being scammed of up to $500 involving the organizer of the Thunder Bay Ball Hockey League.

Sources indicate that a man named RYAN CLARKE has a history of doing this in other provinces as well.

RENEE MARIE LAVIA was also criminally charged.

COOK COUNTY, MINNESOTA ~~~~~  December 29, 2022 (LSNews)  A structure fire at 11 Poplar Creek Drive in the mid-Gunflint Trail area, was reported at 10:58 pm, on Dec 28, 2022.

Responding units arrived to find multiple structures engulfed in flames. The reporting party also stated that there was possibly a man and a dog in one of the units. Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department arrived on the scene at 11:29 p.m.
