TBSO Announces Virtual Second Half of Season 59.5

TBSO Announces Virtual Second Half of Season 59.5

THUNDER BAY,  ONTARIO  January 8, 2021  (LSN)  With the end of the holiday season and a new year in full swing, the TBSO will continue to offer small chamber performances to music lovers in its second half of the 2020/21 Season.

One of our goals is to provide a live concert experience, while another is to broaden the reach of our orchestra. This season has allowed us to discover new ways to reach out and connect with people and we will continue to do just that.

Providing music to our community and beyond is what we love to do. Our musicians, staff, and board members are committed to offering you sounds to soothe your soul.

During the second half of our Season 59.5, from January through March, we will continue offering smaller chamber concerts that will be available online and in person - as safety precautions permit. We have an interesting and exciting collection of concerts that we think will appeal to many.

Live streaming concerts will begin January 22, with two concerts taking place that Friday night at 6:30pm and 8:30pm.

The next live-streamed concert will take place on Friday, January 22nd.

6:30 pm – Northern Winter

  • Sibelius: Duo in C major
  • Lindsey Herle, violin and Marlena Pellegrino, viola
  • Joecelyn Morlock: Shade
  • Marc Palmquist, cello and Kevin Brohman, vibraphone
  • Arvo Pärt: Spiegel im Spiegel
  • Penelope Clarke, flute and Kevin Brohman, vibraphone
  • Linda Caitlin Smith: As you pass by a reflective surface
  • Adora Wong & Madonna Lee, violins; Marlena Pellegrino, viola; and Marc Palmquist, cello
  • R. Murray Schafer: String Quartet No. 10, “Winter Birds”
  • Thomas Cosbey and Michelle Zapf-Bélanger, violins; Geena Salway, viola; Peter Cosbey, cello
  • Celebrating our northern voice with an eclectic mix of wintery soundscapes and icy connections.
  • The warm and lyrical Duo in C Major reflects Sibelius’ love of nature and of his native Finland. Award winning Canadian composers Jocelyn Morlock and Linda Caitlin Smith examine the meaning of shade and reflection. Estonian Arvo Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel is his most popular and well-known work, having a meditative and serene simplicity. And legendary Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer’s String Quartet depicts an outdoor winter scene complete with occasional birds, wind and snow.

8:30 pm – Charming and Cheeky

  • Ravel: Quartet in F
  • Kathlyn Stevens & Stéphanie Caplette, violins; Patrick Horn, viola; and Daniel Parker, cello
  • Poulenc: Sextet for Piano and Winds
  • Doris Dungan, flute; Gwendolyn Buttemer, oboe; E-Chen Hsu, clarinet; Josh Marshall, bassoon; Damian Rivers-Moore, horn; and Christina Faye, piano
  • Contrasting French masters, one whose work embodies the refinement of the Impressionists and the other, the music hall irreverence of Les Six.
  • Ravel’s String Quartet in F is an early work often considered his first masterpiece. This passionate and beautiful quartet demonstrates Ravel’s brilliant juxtaposition of formality and sensuality, and his incredible use of tone color.
  • Poulenc’s Sextet is a masterpiece of French sophistication and offers a lighthearted mix of satire and biting wit, all in a virtuosic framework.
