TRAVERSE CITY, MICHIGAN -  August 8, 2018  (LSN)  A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, Michigan conducted a medevac from Isle Royale in Lake Superior, Tuesday.


Watchstanders in the Coast Guard District Nine Command Center were contacted by a Park Ranger on Isle Royal shortly after 9 p.m. local time, Monday, about an 18 year-old woman experiencing severe dehydration and slipping in and out of consciousness. The woman was part of a 3-person hiking party who set out on Monday morning.

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  - July 25, 2018  (LSN) The Friends of Chippewa Park Carousel Restoration Team want you to celebrate National Carousel Day by not only heading out to Chippewa Park to ride our historic carousel today but by donating to the restoration campaign.

The campaign to raise funds for the restoration of the carousel has reached the halfway mark with $426,732.55 of the target $900,000 required, “but if we are to continue the restoration this fall we need to raise the remainder between now and year end” said Carousel Restoration Committee Co-Chair, Donna Gilhooly.

The third-annual Power Boating Canada/Poker Runs America CAN/AM President’s Cup VIP Poker Run is taking place July 27 to 29. This year’s event is slated to be the biggest yet, with many new and returning performance boats scheduled to take part in the weekend waterfront festivities.


This year’s Poker Run is Mardi Gras-themed. When taking part in the event, the public is encouraged to dress up in masks and beads to join the fun.

GRAND MARAIS, MINNESOTA - July 18, 2018  (LSN) The 89th Annual Fisherman’s Picnic will be celebrated on Aug 2– 5 this year. The Picnic started with Commercial fisherman and their families having a picnic along the North Shore with families and friends during the slow fishing times.

The Grand Marais Lions Club made it an official celebration in 1952.  It is a time when family and class unions are held. While giving opportunities for friends to come together and reunite.

The annual Fisherman’s Picnic is a classic local festival where you can find everything from softball tournaments, fishing contests to lumberjack exhibitions and a parade on Sunday. Some of the wackier events are the fish-tossing contest (participants throw herring back and forth), a loon-calling contest, minnow races and pickled herring-eating contest.

Admission is free and open to the public. 

The Air Station is opening its gates and allowing up-close access to the National Cherry Festival Airshow performers, including the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, two Air National Guard A10’s, the Royal Canadian Air Force HC-130 Hercules, a vintage B17 Bomber, L39 Albatross training jet, and Air Station Traverse City’s own MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters.

The event will include free family fun with live music, kids’ activities, stand-up paddleboarding, informational booths, and food vendors from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., all focused on celebrating and appreciating the greatest Great Lake. 

Prior to the festivities, North Shore SUP will host the inaugural Paddle for the People free recreational paddle race around Barker’s Island. There will be a mandatory check-in from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. with the race beginning at 10 a.m. Following the event, North Shore SUP will offer free stand-up paddleboarding demonstrations.

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONTARIO - June 19, 2018 (LSN)  Sault Ste. Marie was ranked one of the friendliest cities in Canada by Expedia. In an article released last week, the travel website analyzed more than 750 communities based on visitor reviews. The Sault was rated ninth in the country. 


The Expedia article, titled Friendliest Communities (and Towns) in Canada 2018, describes the city as followed: “Located on the banks of the St. Mary’s River, Sault Ste. Marie has always been known for its beauty and easy living. You’ll want to experience the good vibes for yourself.” The report also highlights the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Center and Art Gallery of Algoma. “You’ll see how the lovely area has influenced a wealth of artists,” the article states.

“Fishing together with kids can be a great way to enjoy the outdoors and have some memorable experiences,” said Jeff Ledermann, DNR angler recruitment, retention and education supervisor. “We encourage people to give it a try. It’s fairly easy to buy or borrow fishing poles, and one good way to start is by fishing for bluegills with small hooks, bobbers and live bait.”

MINEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA -  June 4, 2018 (LSN) Efforts to increase the number of hunters and anglers in Minnesota will gain new focus with advice from a 15-member council that the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources is establishing to zero in on hunter and angler recruitment, retention and reactivation.

“Getting more people out in the water, in woods and fields is a significant challenge and worthwhile goal for all Minnesotans,” said James Burnham, DNR hunter and angler recruitment, retention and reactivation (R3) coordinator. “The outcome may decide the success of conservation efforts valued by Minnesotans whether or not they hunt and fish. But we need the public’s help and guidance to move the needle.”

THUNDER BAY, ONTARIO  May 31, 2018  (LSN)  The Save Our Carousel campaign saw a great turnout at their “Sneak Peek” event on Tuesday, May 29 at in the Sleeping Giant Brewery tap room. The event was held as an opportunity to update the community on the ongoing restoration of the Chippewa Park Carousel.  


The event kicked off with Donna Gilhooly, Co-Chair of the carousel restoration project, providing the opening remarks to a full tap room. Jules Tupker, the capital campaign chair, followed and updated the room on the ongoing restoration and how they could get involved.  He reminded the audience that while adopting a horse comes with a $20,000 or $25,000 price tag there are other ways to sponsor or donate with options all the way from 1$ to $25,000.

MADISON, WISCONSIN May 25, 2018  (LSN)  Wisconsin's northern zone musky season opens this Saturday and spring fish assessments are showing anglers won't be disappointed with what they find, with many fish over 40 inches netted and released.

Overall, fishing success was fair along west shore of Green Bay this week. Some anglers were catching good numbers of walleye, smallmouth bass and northern pike. Fishing pressure was high Sunday at Oconto for the perch opener. Anglers on the pier were having a lot of success catching perch, northern pike and the occasional walleye. The walleye bite on the east shore was more consistent with many boats at Bayshore catching close to their limit.

CLEVELAND.OHIO –  May 23, 2018  (LSN)  The Great Lakes are one of America’s busiest waterways.  Each year U.S., Canadian and vessels from throughout the world move upwards of 160 million tons of cargos that drive the North American economy.  The largest vessels, the U.S.-flag 1,000-footers, are almost as long as modern-day aircraft carriers and their power plants are capable of generating nearly 20,000 horsepower.

The Memorial Day Weekend is also traditionally the start of the summer boating season on the Lakes.  Commercial and recreational vessels can co-exist safely, but to do so will require good seamanship by all involved.

The event will have dozens of varieties of locally-grown perennial wildflowers, grasses, and herbs for sale to the general public on Saturday, May 26 from 9 a.m. to noon, hosted behind EcoSuperior’s office at 562 Red River Rd at the corner of Hill St.

“These plants play an important role in urban greenspaces by supporting biodiversity, pollinators and native habitat,” says Julia Prinselaar, program coordinator at EcoSuperior. She added that the plants are locally grown at Paulusma’s Greenhouses, a family-operated plant nursery in Thunder Bay.

BUFFALO, NEW YORK  – May 22, 2018   (LSN)  U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office of Field Operations has added the Buffalo Field Office to the list of locations now using the new Reporting Offsite Arrival-Mobile (ROAM) application for small boat reporting.

The new application replaces the current system of utilizing one of sixteen Outlying Area Reporting Stations (OARS), which were outdated and challenging to access.  Small boaters in the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence regions will now be able to complete their inspection with a CBP officer through an application on their personal smart phone device, or at one of the new ROAM reporting locations, which will have the reporting application loaded onto an iPad.

No one plans to get lost out on the water. No one plans to have their boat break down far away from land. No one plans to have an accident on the water. And unfortunately, not many people plan ahead to make it easier to be found by the Coast Guard.
