At Macy’s department store in New York City, Christmas is big business. By chance they’ve hired a man named Kris Kringle as this year’s Santa Claus. His unconventional ways unleash waves of goodwill that turn Macy’s and the commercial world of Christmas in New York upside down. A classic for more than 70 years, this story of triumph of faith over greed and goodwill over commercialism is as relevant and meaningful as ever. Can one nice old man with whiskers change the lives of a world-weary mother, her little girl and all of New York City?
Magnus Theatre presents Miracle On 34th Street, a wonderful stage adaptation of the family favourite to give merriment and meaning back to this holiday season from December 7-23. Written by Canadian playwright Caleb Marshall, this new production brings together some of the best known and busiest actors in Canada, alongside some of Thunder Bay’s best known local performers.
Walter Learning plays Kris Kringle. Learning has enjoyed an almost sixty-year career that has seen him at the helm of theatres across the country and beyond. He is joined by onstage Kevin Hare, returning to Magnus Theatre to play Santa’s attorney Fred Gailey, and Magnus newcomer Alison J. Palmer as Doris, a skeptical young mother who works at Macy’s. Eleven-year-old local actress Anne-Sophie Lalonde plays Susan, a little girl who simply does not believe in Santa Claus or anything he stands for.
The cast is rounded out by a virtual who’s who of the national theatre scene. Internationally acclaimed actor and playwright Douglas E. Hughes makes his Magnus Theatre debut in several roles, as does renowned actor/director Andrew Cecon, alongside Magnus favourite and Broadway veteran Sandy Winsby. Local performers Andrew Paulson, Jessica Krasnichuk and eight-year-old Kael Ewan Napper complete the cast, all playing multiple roles.
“This is an amazing company, a blend of some of Canada’s finest actors working alongside some wonderful and familiar faces from Thunder Bay,” declares Magnus Artistic Director Thom Currie. “I am thrilled at the prospect of bringing this story to life on the Magnus stage with this incredible cast.”
